I know the world is a very hectic place. There’s groceries to buy, bills to pay … things to be googled, tweeted, and instagrammed. Sometimes we lose track of all the things that once mattered to us as children, primarily the books we read.
I don’t mean to imply that you set your copy of The Mouse and the Motorcycle down somewhere and can’t find it anymore(though that may also be the case). I mean we tend to forget the important role books played in our lives as children. All of the adventures that the Hardy Boys went on, and the zany antics of Ramona Quimby … they all taught us important lessons while simultaneously letting our imaginations wander and grow.
It’s far easier to set our little munchkins down in front of a TV and pop on Frozen than it is to actually read to them. But for the month of April, we should all D.E.A.R.(drop everything and read) if only for an hour each day. And maybe after a few days of sitting there with your children, they might actually pick up the habit for themselves! Then you can sit back with your coffee and watch them as their hungry, little minds devour volumes of Beverly Cleary and Roald Dahl!
Or–better yet–pick up a book yourself and make reading one of your family activities! You can visit http://www.fsfnet.com/2015/04/03/drop-everything-read-sale/ for great deals this weekend on the best in science fiction and fantasy! All of the authors there are writers of family friendly books!
